Bithun Sarkar is a Toronto-based documentary photographer and an engineer.
Born in Bogra, Bangladesh, Bithun spent the bulk of his childhood in north Bengal before immigrating to Canada at an early age. To the adolescent eyes, the two worlds appeared vastly different – the landscape, the culture, and the climate. Yet he discovered that while our similarities give us a common ground, it is really our differences that allow us to be fascinated with each other. Through his work, Bithun aspires to capture those very similarities and fascinating differences that tell the collective story of our shared human experience.
Bithun’s work focuses on socioeconomic and climate change related environmental issues, and explores potential solutions in vulnerable and marginalized communities around the world. His recent photo essays cover community development work in Western Kenya (Kar Geno), the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar (CARE International), the shipbuilding and brick-making industries in Dhaka.
Bithun holds a masters degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto. When away from the camera, he manages sustainable infrastructure and environmental projects.
